SLIDE_CANVAS RULE EMULATOR - USER NOTES
Return to Slide Rule Emulator |
VERSION 17 Apr 2020. Cursor / slide fine adjustment added.
HARDWARE NOTE.
Because a slide rule is a "long thin thing", this software needs a screen with a width of 1800 pixels or more. Lesser widths should still work, but definition will be poor. It is intended to be used on a desktop or laptop computer with a mouse or touch pad. Dragging with a finger on touch screen devices does not work, but should work with an external mouse.
INTRODUCTION
On first use, you see a 'Basic' slide rule.
If necessary, adjust the zoom with 'Ctrl + Mouse Wheel' so that the whole rule is visible.
To move slide or cursor, hold down left mouse button and drag to required position.
You can fine adjust slide or cursor position, 1 pixel at a time, either with 'l' or 'r' keys or with left or right mouse button clicks.
SNAP slide
The 'Snap slide' L, C & R buttons move the slide fully left, exactly central or fully right.
The X button moves the slide exactly a full scale left or right as appropriate, so that the 1 mark on the C scale is where the 10 mark was originally, or vice versa.
SELECT A DIFFERENT RULE
This is a drop down list of the various slide rules stored in memory.
Each rule has different scale combinations and intended purpose.
Select the one you want from the list.
CREATE A NEW RULE
This button will add a new rule to the drop down list. It will be remembered for future sessions, unless you restore initial configuration.
A simple A,B,C,D slide rule is initially displayed.
The name will initially be "Please change my name". Use "Change Rule Name" to make the name meaningful.
Then configure the upper bar, slide, lower bar and base as detailed below.
CHANGE RULE NAME
Click on this cell to change the name of the current slide rule, then press 'Enter'.
Names must be unique.
Names are sorted alphabetically. Permitted characters are A-Z, a-z, 0-9 and spaces. Some names are preceeded with "z" so that they appear at the end of the list.
LIST OF SCALES
The large blue table is an alphabetical list of the scales that are stored in memory and available for you to use.
The "Scale Names" in the first column are used when you wish to add or change a scale to the current rule.
CHANGE UPPER SCALES
This cell holds the 'Scale Names' of the scales presently shown on the UPPER BAR of the slide rule.
You can edit this to any combination of scales that you wish.
Each scale must be separated by a comma. Spaces are optional. Letters are not case sensitive.
You can have as many scales as you like on this (or any other) bar. The bar will change size accordingly.
A scale can appear more than once if you so wish.
If any part of the entry is invalid, a message will appear and an empty scale will be created for the invalid part(s) of the entry.
CHANGE SLIDE and LOWER SCALES
These cells are similar to CHANGE UPPER SCALES above.
CHANGE SCALES ON BASE
This cell is also similar to CHANGE UPPER SCALES above. The "base" is the area behind the slide. On conventional slide rules, this area is usually blank, engraved with maker's details or usage hints. However, as many slide rules have a reversible slide, these base scales enable you to emulate the scales on the back of the reversible slide. The Left and Right Snap slide buttons are provided to enable rapid visibility of any base scales. (If you specify more scales here than on the slide, the excess ones will not be visible.)
DELETE THIS RULE
After confirmation, this button permanently removes the curently selected slide rule from the drop down list.
RESTORE INITIAL CONFIGURATION
After confirmation, this button deletes all entered slide rule combinations and replaces it with the original list.
NOTES
1. FIDELITY OF EMULATION. No attempt has been made to reproduce the looks of any specific manufactured rule. If you choose the same scale layout as a particular device, then the functionality should be the same. The Snap slide functions emulate, or perhaps simplify, common user movements of the slide.
2. TRIGONOMETRICAL SCALES. The ST scale is valid in its range for both Sine and Tangent. Sin0 and Tan0 are effectively duplicates. Similarly, the Sin1 and Cos1 are duplicates of the SC scale.
